Tragedy struck over the weekend, as a basketball star who had recently joined the United States Air Force was killed in a hit-and-run accident while kayaking on Grapevine Lake in Texas, according to the New York Post.
Two women in a jet ski plowed into 18-year-old Ava Moore, per the outlet, before fleeing the scene.
“Once she came out of the water, I had them lay her down and started helping at that point,” witness Lisa Scrabeck said of the aftermath. “Started life-saving measures to help the young girl.”
Local authorities said that the woman operating the jet ski fled the scene with a man in a car, while the passenger on the jet ski stayed at the scene to be interviewed by police.
People reacted to the tragedy on social media.
“Wouldn’t be surprised if she was drunk and now that she’s taken off and hidden, they can’t prove her alcohol levels, but she was still driving the jet ski and killed that young lady who was peacefully kayaking,” one person wrote on Twitter.
“What a piece of garbage. It might have been an accident, but to leave her to die and take off running to save her own butt, life in jail. Character after the fact needs to be taken into account, add in the extra hit and run,” someone else wrote.
“Drunk or not, straight to jail, and for a long time,” another person wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see if the suspect is apprehended.
