On Tuesday night, Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani officially secured victory in the election, becoming the next Mayor of New York City. But Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy isn’t exactly thrilled about the outcome.
During a YouTube livestream on Oct. 25, Portnoy voiced his frustration over Mamdani’s apparent path to victory, even revealing that he’d spoken with Barstool’s financial team about the possibility of relocating the company to nearby New Jersey — making it clear that he “hates” him.
“Honestly, I’ve given that a lot of thought — he’s definitely going to win — going to Hoboken or Jersey City or something,” Portnoy said via Awful Announcing. “I don’t want to [freaking] have an office (in Manhattan). But then we have all those people who, like, that [messes] up their life because I hate the guy … so it’s a Catch-22.”
Portnoy insisted that his stance was rooted in principle, saying it was a “principled stand” and claiming that Mamdani “hates America.”
“I can’t stand the thought of (Mamdani) running New York City. I can’t stand it,” Portnoy said during the stream. “Then a part of me is like, how much will actually change? But I really have given it thought. I told our finance guys to start looking around for property, no joke. Take a principled stand. Thirty-something-year-old Communist running New York City who’s never had a job in his life, hates America, doesn’t seem like the best.”
Needless to say, these comments led to a lot of reactions on social media.
“With all these people deciding to move out of New York, it would appear that less expensive housing is an almost certainty,” one person wrote in a post on X.
“If all of these people leave, it will lower demand and decrease the cost of living. Magical,” someone else posted.
“If he could move barstool off of all social media platforms the world would be a better place,” another person added.
“What a Snowflake,” someone else said.
“All these rich people clutching their pearls just reinforces that Mamdani is the right choice,” another person wrote.
Whether or not Portnoy follows through on his talk of moving Barstool out of New York remains to be seen. But one thing’s for sure — his feelings about Mamdani couldn’t be clearer.
