As Herschel Walker’s Georgia senate campaign continues to be marred by self-inflicted scandals, former president Donald Trump has come to his defense.

Tuesday afternoon, Trump issued a statement lashing out at the media for the bombshell abortion report about Walker (R-GA), who is running for Georgia senate on a pro-life platform.

“Herschel Walker is being slandered and maligned by the Fake News Media and obviously, the Democrats. Interestingly, I’ve heard many horrible things about his opponent, Raphael Warnock, things that nobody should be talking about, so we don’t,” Trump wrote on Tuesday.

“Herschel has properly denied the charges against him, and I have no doubt he is correct,” Trump claimed. “They are trying to destroy a man who has true greatness in his future, just as he had athletic greatness in his past. It’s very important for our Country and the Great State of Georgia that Herschel Walker wins this Election. With all that Herschel has accomplished, when you come from Georgia, and you see the name Herschel Walker when voting, it will be very hard to resist. Don’t!”

The Daily Beast recently reported a damaging story about Walker’s campaign, alleging the pro-life Republican encouraged his girlfriend to get an abortion in 2009. Walker has denied the allegations and threatened to sue, but no legal steps have been taken on the matter. Since the denial, Walker’s son and former campaign supporter Christian Walker has blasted the Georgia senate nominee for lying about his personal life.

Trump, who is not known for showing restraint in terms of criticizing others, didn’t elaborate on the “horrible things” he’s heard about Warnock, Georgia’s Democratic incumbent. Nor did he address any of the evidence against Walker that’s been reported by The Daily Beast and the rest of the media, which includes a clinic receipt. But Trump did manage to cite past “athletic greatness” for the former Georgia Bulldog, so Walker still has that going for him.

The abortion report is just the latest scandal to hit Walker’s campaign, which has been marred by the former NFL running back’s self-inflicted missteps. Walker has attempted to hide undisclosed children from the public and even his own campaign team, he exaggerated his business records, lied about academics, and falsely claimed he was a trained FBI agent.
