Former president Donald Trump, who is currently running for re-election as president in 2024, will likely avoid rallying with Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker ahead of Georgia’s special runoff election next month.
The New York Times broke the news. Walker’s campaign had faced a conundrum with Trump’s adjacent presidential campaign. Walker’s campaign asked the former president to campaign elsewhere in the final days before the Nov. 8th midterm elections. Walker’s campaign has welcomed the help of popular Republican governors like Brian Kemp of Georgia and Ron DeSantis of Florida, both of whom won sweeping re-election in the election earlier this month. Trump, for his part, is seen as an albatross.
Walker faces Reverend Raphael Warnock in the nation’s most brutal election cycle of the 2022 midterm elections. Walker’s campaign has been rocked by a series of scandals and gaffes, including the most recent revelation that Walker claimed a $1,500 tax credit on his $3 million home outside Dallas, Texas, that was intended only for primary residences.
Warnock currently has three times the amount of campaign cash on hand as Walker, nearly $30 million compared to $10 million. Warnock leads the country in fundraising during the cycle.
Georgia voters head to the polls to finally decide the election on Dec. 6th. Democrats already retained control of the Senate in 2023.
