The relationship between the United States and Canada has been strained as a result of Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada and his persistent push to annex Canada as the 51st U.S. state. However, a triumph in the 4 Nations Face-Off gave Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the perfect opening to send a pretty brutal message to Trump.

On Thursday evening, the United States squared off against Canada in the 4 Nations Face-Off Final. Ahead of the matchup, Donald Trump hopped on social media to jab at Canada while rallying behind the U.S. team.

“I’ll be calling our GREAT American Hockey Team this morning to spur them on towards victory tonight against Canada, which with FAR LOWER TAXES AND MUCH STRONGER SECURITY, will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished, and very important, Fifty First State,” Trump declared in a post on Truth Social.

Trump didn’t stop there, sending a pretty brutal message to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well, playfully calling him “Governor Trudeau.”

“I will be speaking before the Governors tonight in D.C., and will sadly, therefore, be unable to attend. But we will all be watching, and if Governor Trudeau would like to join us, he would be most welcome. Good luck to everybody, and have a GREAT game tonight. So exciting!” Trump added in his post.

In the end, Canada got the win in the game, edging out the United States 3-2 with a clutch overtime goal from Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid.

The victory handed Trudeau the ideal moment to fire back at Trump with a savage comeback.

“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau wrote in a post on X.

Needless to say, this was a pretty brutal bit of trash talk directed at Trump after Canada’s win, and it led to a lot of reactions online.

“This is how you tweet as a leader of a nation. Concise, coherent and relevant with a hint of middle finger,” one person wrote on X.

“First time most Americans were secretly rooting for this result,” another person added.

“The US is now a Canadian province and Premier Trump is furious,” someone else said.

“You know this just grinds Trump’s gears,” another person wrote.

“The kind of victorious trash talk Americans can relate to,” someone else said.

The two nations will get another shot at each other in a couple of years at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. We’ll have to see who comes out on top.
