Rapper Kanye West was the source of controversy over the past few weeks after he publicly declared himself as a Nazi on social media and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler before using a Super Bowl commercial on Fox to direct viewers to his Yeezy.com website which featured only a single image of a white T-shirt bearing a swastika. However, it seems that the rapper is now walking back those views.
In a post on social media on Thursday, Kanye West declared that he has “come to the realization” that he is not a Nazi, after all.
“After further reflection I’ve come to the realization that I’m not a Nazi,” West, who now goes by simply “Ye,” wrote in a post on X this week.
This declaration came shortly after he indicated that he had a conversation with A-list actor and comedian Adam Sandler, who is Jewish.
“Adam Sandler Thank you for the love,” Ye wrote in a post on X.
It’s not clear whether or not the conversation was related to West’s realization that he is not actually a Nazi.
The rapper faced a lot of criticism for his antics over the past several days and weeks.
The Anti-Defamation League released a statement last week asking Fox Sports to condemn the commercial and the rapper’s hate speech.
“At the Super Bowl, hate took a front-row seat. Kanye West promoted an ad with a link to swastika t-shirts, broadcasting it to millions on live TV. Just days earlier, his dangerous rants on X praised Hitler, self-identified as a Nazi, and spread antisemitic vitriol. In 2022, ADL identified 30 incidents of harassment, assault, and vandalism linked to Kanye’s online outbursts. We refuse to let hate win. Bigotry has consequences. Join ADL in demanding that Fox Sports condemn this ad and never give hate a platform again,” the ADL petition said.
Fox Television Stations CEO Jack Abernethy sent an internal memo throughout the company regarding the controversial Super Bowl commercial that aired on Fox Networks.
“We regret that these commercials aired in these three markets, and we strongly condemn any form of antisemitism,” Abernethy said.
Obviously, not everyone will take Ye at his word, but he has indeed walked back his comments.
