Before Brittney Griner became one of the most dominant players in the WNBA, she was a star member of the Baylor Bears women’s basketball team, helping lead the program to the 2012 national title under former head coach Kim Mulkey.

Griner and Mulkey spent four seasons together at Baylor, but apparently, that history isn’t enough to convince Mulkey to offer her comments on Griners’ long-term imprisonment in Russia.

On Monday, a reporter asked Mulkey her thoughts on the Brittney Griner situation, saying “I don’t think I’ve seen anything from you on that.”

Mulkey offered quite a blunt and calloused response, saying “and you won’t,” declining to comment on her former player’s tragic situation and moving on to answer another question.

It seems like quite an odd and cold response from a coach that spent four years alongside Griner and could even have Griner to thank for the team’s 2012 national title. And the sports world absolutely Mulkey her for it.

Meanwhile, Griner is still held in Russian custody after she was found guilty of drug charges and is now serving a nine-year sentence. The U.S. and Russia have been engaged in negotiations for quite a while in an attempt to bring the WNBA star back home, but no official update or timeline has been given.
