Most remember former Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Steve Garvey as a legend of the game of baseball and one of the best players of his generation. However, he may be seen in a different light after reports emerged that the former baseball star is considering running for U.S. Senate in California.

Garvey has never held elected office, but is reportedly being asked by leaders in both the Republican and Democratic parties to consider a bid for the seat.

Republican strategist Andy Gharakhani, who is also advising Garvey, confirmed this in a message to the Los Angeles Times.

“He is being contacted by leaders up and down the state. They’re recruiting him to run from both sides, Republican and Democrat, and he’s seriously considering it,” said Gharakhani, “We should have a decision made here in the next few weeks.”

Garvey played 19 years in MLB, racking up an impressive resume in the process. He played for the Dodgers and Padres over his lengthy tenure in the league but is best known for his 14-year run in Los Angeles.

During his time in Los Angeles, he played in eight All-Star games, earned an MVP award in 1981, and helped the organization take home a World Series title that year. With the Padres, he made two more All-Star teams and helped San Diego win the National League pennant in 1984.

If he does decide to run for the seat, it’s unclear if he would have a realistic chance to actually win the election. However, he is certainly a very popular name to the Dodgers and Padres fans that live in the state — which can’t hurt.
