Sports are the great equalizer that can bring everybody together. That was extremely evident on Tuesday afternoon in America after the USMNT won in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The USMNT won 1-0 over Iran to advance to the World Cup knockout stage. Star player Christian Pulisic scored the lone goal for the team late in the first half. The US held on despite a furious rally by Iran late in the match.

Their victory pushed them to the Round of 16, where they will play the Netherlands. The matchup between the USMNT and the Netherlands will happen on Saturday morning.

Politicians all over America tweeted in support after the USMNT’s victory. President Joe Biden was among them. Biden earlier tweeted, “We believe that we will win.” After the match, he then tweeted, “We did.”

Biden also commented on the win in the press room. He cheered on the team and recalled, “That’s a big game man. When I spoke to the coach and the players I said, ‘You can do this!’ … They did it. God love ’em.”

Several U.S. Senators also chimed in after the victory. New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker tweeted and simultaneously endorsed his own state. He said, “It is no surprise that New Jersey leads the U.S. to victory. Congratulations to Jersey natives Matt Turner, Brenden Aaronson, and Coach Gregg Berhalter – and of course, to the entire USMNT.”

Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington also chimed in. Cantwell tweeted, “Congrats to the USMNT for advancing to the Men’s World Cup round of 16!”

Georgia Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock also came through. Warnock posted a tweet that said, “Go Team USA” and included a video of him among fans who watched the match.

Republicans also got in on the fun too. Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn tweeted, “Go Team USA. Congrats on defeating Iran!”

Last but not least, the Senate Republicans’ account tweeted on behalf of the group. They said, “Win and advance! Let’s go, USMNT.”
