During the actual 1990s, Adam Sandler killed it on the silver screen. Sandler starred in Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, and The Waterboy all in the 90s. While he can’t physically go back, Sandler is doing the next best thing and making a movie that takes place in the 90s.

Netflix recently announced Sandler will be starring in a new movie that will premiere on the streaming service that’s set in the 1990s. The name of the movie will be Sandy Wexler and Sandler will star as a talent manager in the 1990s.

Jennifer Hudson is set to star as Sandler’s love interest and talented aspiring singer in the film. After directing Sandler in Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, and Sandler’s recent Netflix movie The Do-Over, Steve Brill will once again direct Sandler’s newest project.

The release describes Sandler’s character as one who:

“Diligently represents a group of eccentric clients on the fringes of show business.”

Sandler is reportedly going to find Hudson’s character Courtney Clarke singing at an amusement park and that’s when he not only begins to fall in love with her, but first hears her talent. Hudson is well known for signing after all. She first competed in the third season of American Idol before landing signing/acting roles in movies like Dreamgirls and Chi-Rag.

While it wants all of its movies to succeed, Netflix really needs this new Sandler project to do well. The two combined to make The Ridiculous 6, which reportedly offended Native Americans during production and in the movie itself.

“(The movie made jokes about) Native women’s names such as Beaver’s Breath and No Bra, an actress portraying an Apache woman squatting and urinating while smoking a peace pipe, and feathers inappropriately positioned on a teepee.”

While all recent signs point to Sandler and Netflix not striking gold with this movie, the real 1990s are hoping Sandler returns to form. After all, The Wedding Singer was a great romantic comedy made in the 1990s with Sandler.
