Australia new cash

Australia’s new $5 bill is generating a mixed reaction from Aussies.

The bill was announced on Tuesday, and so far the response hasn’t been positive. It’s drawn criticism for its busyness, colourfulness, and the fact it doesn’t really look like money.

Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia Glenn Stevens said in a press release there are pros to the design, as the new bill will be difficult to counterfeit.

“Innovative new security features have been incorporated to help keep Australia’s banknotes secure from counterfeiting into the future. As can be seen in the images, these include a distinctive top-to-bottom window. Each banknote in the new series will depict a different species of Australian wattle and a native bird within a number of the elements. On the $5 banknote, these are the Prickly Moses wattle and the Eastern Spinebill.”

The bill might pass the counterfeit test, but it certainly fails the eye test. The note has way too many things going on. It’s looks like a hodge podge of ideas all thrown into one. I’m a Canadian who’s fully aware our money looks ridiculous too, but at least there’s a consistent theme. The Australian bill has weird colours and odd designs. As one Twitter user describes it, it looks like somebody ‘clown puked’ on it.

The internet wasn’t kind with their reviews.

Whether they like it or not, Australians will have to get used to the new unique bill as it enters circulation in September.
