Through two seasons, AMC’s Better Call Saul has been a tremendous prequel spin-off series to arguably the best television drama of all-time, Breaking Bad.
There have been several surprise appearances from notable Breaking Bad characters on Better Call Saul, while Breaking Bad stars Saul Goodman (played by Bob Odenkirk) and Mike Ehrmantraut (played by Jonathan Banks) serve as the main characters on Better Call Saul.
However, we have not seen an appearance from Bryan Cranston as Walter White. Keep in mind, Better Call Saul takes place several years before Breaking Bad, so this is back when White was a harmless high school chemistry teacher, rather than the meth kingpin “Heisenberg” he would eventually become (spoiler alert!).
Well, on Tuesday’s edition of the The Rich Eisen Show, Cranston was asked if he would be willing to make a cameo on Better Call Saul. Cranston said he’s “all-in”.
I owe Vince Gilligan so much. He was my champion to get [the Walter White] role. I was the guy coming off ‘Malcolm in the Middle’. If they were to call me and say, ‘We have this idea, we’d like … ,’ I would say, ‘Yes, you don’t have to finish the pitch. I’m there, what do you want me to do?’
I know how careful they are and proprietary they are with those characters and those storylines, and it wouldn’t be something, ‘Oh, isn’t that kind of a stunt casting kind of thing.’ It would be something kind of unique and obscure and creative, and I’m all-in.”
Cranston even said that he’s been approached about directing an episode, but he’s hesitant about that, for a pretty hilarious reason that we can all relate to: He doesn’t want to be spoiled about Better Call Saul episodes that haven’t aired yet!
“I’m a fan of the show, and in order to direct, I need to know what no fan knows … and there’s a part of me that says that would kind of kill it for me as a fan to peek behind the curtain, so I don’t know if I am [going to direct] or not.”
Fantastic. Here’s full video of Cranston talking with Rich Eisen about Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul:
