Emma Stone is arguably the planet’s coolest actress. Her diverse acting range (which landed her roles from everything to The Amazing Spider-Man, to Birdman, to La La Land), plus her charming down-to-earth personality, have made her among the most endearing and bankable stars. Name a genre and she can kill it.

Despite her enviable acting skills, Stone told Rolling Stone her comedic creativity has been stifled at times, as lines she’s ad-libbed have been given to her male co-stars:

“There are times in the past, making a movie when I’ve been told that I’m hindering the process by bringing up an opinion or an idea,” Stone says. “I hesitate to make it about being a woman, but there have been times when I’ve improvised, they’ve laughed at my joke and then given it to my male co-star. Given my joke away. Or it’s been me saying, ‘I really don’t think this line is gonna work,’ and being told, ‘Just say it, just say it, if it doesn’t work we’ll cut it out’ – and they didn’t cut it out, and it really didn’t work!’”

Considering Hollywood’s ass-backwards mindset towards gender equality, I have no doubt in my mind Stone’s comments are true. Frankly, it’s amazing someone with Stone’s talent can come up with great jokes on the spot and instead of being rewarded with some credit, those lines are given to her male co-stars. It’s bullshit.

Nobody — especially an Oscar-nominated actress with the range of Stone’s — should be treated unfairly. Kudos to her for speaking out.

Hopefully, directors and producers will receive the message and allow Stone to make her own jokes and get the laughs herself.
