In 2014, George Lucas stood on the lakefront in Chicago and wanted to bring a Museum of Narrative Art with his name in front to the Windy City. After a couple of years of negotiations, speculation and political red tape, the museum is going to need to find a new home.
“Unfortunately, time has run out, and the moment we’ve consistently warned about has arrived,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. “Chicago’s loss will be another city’s gain.”
The museum was not only supposed to house fine art, but as the name of George Lucas would portend, would also house illustrations and sketches from Star Wars and other film franchise and groups such as Blade Runner and various Pixar movies. But after a local interest group called Friends of the Parks filed suit in November of 2014, the project has been stuck, and now Lucas will be looking for a new home for his museum. Speculation has matched Los Angeles and Lucas together.
Originally, the plan was to have the museum in San Francisco not far away from the Lucasfilm offices, but Lucas failed to reach agreement with the city, and that’s why Chicago came into the picture.
Third time’s the charm, George?
