Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Doritos have teamed up to create one of the strangest promotions in recent memory. In an effort to promote the upcoming Marvel offering, the two groups worked together to create a Doritos bag which will play the full soundtrack from the film.

Sound familiar? If it does, it’s probably because you’ve seen Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping from The Lonely Island team.

Here are the details on the limited edition bag courtesy of Billboard:

“Popular snack brand Doritos and Marvel Studios are going retro as they partner for the rollout of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack. The centerpiece of the pair’s Rock Out Loud campaign is a custom-designed, limited-edition series of Doritos bags featuring a built-in cassette tape deck-inspired player that plays the full soundtrack. The bags can also be recharged for repeat listening.”

That’s right – you can recharge your chip bag in case you want to listen to it again.

All of the above sounds pretty similar to the idea created by Deborah (it’s pronounced Da-Bore-Ah) in Popstar, as pointed out by Collider.

In Popstar, Conner 4 Real has his new album promoted by having songs play through a variety of household appliances. As you might imagine, people hate it when their washers, dryers and every other appliance unexpectedly plays his music. That’s not too far off from the idea of a chips bag playing the soundtrack from the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Of course, the Doritos campaign isn’t a total surprise, as fans will have to buy the special bags intentionally. That may help this work out a little better than the Popstar concept. Still,  we’d like to think someone at Marvel or Doritos came up with this because they were a big fan of Connor 4 Real and Popstar.
