John Oliver

HBO is gearing up for the return of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, so it is taking the time now to remind viewers the show has actually been off the air. The show ended its third season near the end of 2016, but it is possible that fact has gone flying under the radar for many. And that sets up HBO’s promo for the return of the weekly comedy news headline commentary show perfectly.

Teasing the return of a fan favorite show, HBO subtly jabs John Oliver to remind him just where he stands in the HBO hierarchy. And just when you think there is no other way they can knock Oliver down the totem pole, they manage to do so with a good joke that also takes aim at another long-time fan favorite and perhaps the network as well.

The return of Oliver will be good for HBO as late night comedy hosts will be busy with the inauguration of Donald Trump as president. HBO will get a later start on the Trump presidency than other late night programs, and Oliver will surely have some commentary ready to roll when he hits the air.

His show also comes on Sunday and can wrap up a week’s worth of content where his late night brethren typically are on each night. Regardless, Oliver has taken aim at Trump throughout the election season and will sure to be coming out blazing once Last Week Tonight returns.
