Avatar

Director James Cameron channeled his inner Lebron James on Thursday at CinemaCon, announcing a fifth installment of Avatar is in the works.

Do you not remember the sequels to the hit 2009 film? That’s probably because there haven’t been any yet. Avatar doesn’t even have a sequel currently in production (Avatar 2 starts this month), so to announce a fifth movie is just a bit ambitious.

For those who forget, Avatar was about humans visiting Pandora (not the music streaming service) to mine unobtanium (….) and the Na’vi’s (aka those ten-foot tall blue cats) fight against them. It’s was the highest grossing film of all time not adjusted for inflation with $2.788 billion earned. That’s $700 million more than Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film was a technical marvel using new motion capture techniques and had incredible 3D effects. Avatar was a cinematic experience. I loved it so much, I saw it in theaters six times.

Still, I don’t think the appetite is quite there for this many sequels. Like many, I’ve never thought of Avatar as a movie that needed a sequel, let alone four of them. Heck, I’ve never thought about Avatar since I last saw it in theaters.

It’s hard to doubt James Cameron, however, as he’s delivered so many great films including The Terminator and Titanic. He’s also directed two of the greatest sequels of all time in Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. If we should trust anybody with that many sequels, it should be Cameron. But five movies is, quite frankly, insane. It’s unlikely a sequel matches the initial Avatar‘s success, but I guess we’ll find out.
