In a fantastic tribute to Tom Petty and the victims of the Las Vegas massacre, this week’s edition of Saturday Night Live opened with Jason Aldean making a surprise appearance and singing the Petty classic “I Won’t Back Down.”

The mass shooting that left 59 dead and over 500 injured happened while Aldean was onstage at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

Aldean first addressed the Las Vegas tragedy, and then went on to perform “I Won’t Back Down” in a very touching moment.

“So many people hurting. There are children, parents, brothers, sisters, friends, they’re all part of our family. So I want to say to them, we hurt for you and we hurt with you. You can be sure that we’re going to walk through these tough times together every step of the way. Because when America is at its best, our bond, and our spirit… it’s unbreakable.”

Beautifully done by Aldean and SNL.
