Black Panther is returning to Wakanda.
On Friday, Marvel Studios dropped the first teaser trailer for Black Panther.
I’ve been fawning over the prospects of a Black Panther film since the movie was announced back in 2014. The iconic Marvel superhero seemed destined for big screen glory – which was delivered in his dynamic MCU debut in Captain America: Civil War.
After announcing a cast that includes Chadwick Boseman, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan and Forest Whitaker (as well as Creed director Ryan Coogler), there were many reasons to be optimistic. This trailer delivers on high expectations.
In the trailer, locked-up baddie Ulysses Klaw (Serkis) talks with Deputy Task Force Commander Everett K. Ross (Freeman) about the mysterious hidden African nation of Wakanda. Unseen to those outside, Wakanda is a thriving, technologically advanced nation fiercely protected by Black Panther (the newly acting king) and the Royal Family. Not too many plot details are given away, but it appears Klaw is trying to force his way back into Wakanda by any means necessary. Furthermore, Erik Killmonger (Jordan) looks to overthrow and disrupt from within. Wakanda doesn’t seem to be hidden anymore.
It’s a small, yet fully sufficient taste for what should be one heck of an action-adventure. With all the incredible stars, Coogler’s stylish direction and the folks at Marvel overseeing everything, Black Panther will be the first big superhero blockbuster of 2018 (it comes out in February). It’s a damn shame we’ll have to wait so long to see it, but the wait will surely be worth it.
