Netflix and Gilmore Girls working on possible second reboot season

Could a second reboot season of Gilmore Girls be on the way?

Netflix has released plenty of revivals in recent years, from Fuller House to Arrested Development to Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp. While those all did well, Gilmore Girls was one of the more anticipated revivals to be released on the streaming service and now it could be coming back for a second tour.

According to Deadline, the popular streaming service Netflix and the creators of Gilmore Girls are talking about a possible second revival installment of the famous franchise.

Speaking with the UK’s Press Association, Netflix Chief Content Office Ted Sarandos said Netflix and the Gilmore creators have had “preliminary” talks about a possible Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life part two of sorts.

“We hope,” Sarandos said. “We obviously loved the success of the show, fans loved how well it was done, it delivered what they hoped. The worst thing is to wait a couple of years for your favorite show to come back and for it to disappoint you, but they sure delivered and people were really excited about more, and we have been talking to them about the possibility of that.”

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was released exclusively on Netflix on November 25th, 2016 as a four-part series. That was nine years after the show ended its run on TV that stretched from October of 2000 to May of 2007.

Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Dan Palladino started the series back in 2000 and then relaunched it with Netflix last year. The duo did not work on the show’s seventh season in their same roles after a dispute. It took a long time for the two to get back to the show and have it ultimately premiere on Netflix.

Deadline already reported back in December that Sherman-Palladino wasn’t closing the door on more Gilmore Girls after the revival on Netflix. The Netflix four-part series averaged an incredible 4.97 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic. The first episode alone drew 5.99 million viewers in that demo in the first three days it was on Netflix. Though to be fair, since Netflix doesn’t release its viewership numbers on a regular basis, we have nothing to compare these viewership totals to.

The revival took place nine years in show time after the show ended. If a part two were to be launched on Netflix, it remains to be seen if the show would push the story forward another nine years or so or pick up where the revival left off. After all, (SPOILERS COMING) the revival did end with Rory pregnant, which was a major plot point and the ideal ending Sherman-Palladino had in mind for a long time.
