If you came to know The Rock in the 1990s or early 2000s while watching professional wrestling, then you know there were a few signature features about him. The eyebrow is probably the first one that comes to mind for most, but his bull tattoo on his arm always seemed to stand out on its own as well. Over the years, The Rock’s Brahma Bull tattoo has grown up.

Dwayne Johnson took to his Instagram account recently to announce he was ready to give his awesome bull tattoo an upgrade, and today unveiled the updated, and not-yet-completed result. The ink work was done by famous tattoo artist Nico Hurtado and it required 22 hours of work over three sessions. The upgrade is a work of art that actually covers up the original Brahma Bull, but Johnson says each detail has a story that connects to him in some way.

Every detail is a reflection of my own personal history. From the cracks and heavy damage in the bone representing life’s hard lessons I’ve learned over the years. Just like scars and wrinkles – I’m so grateful to have ’em because they’re earned. To the horns, not pointing up or out to the side, but pointing straight ahead representing relentless energy and forward progress. The core and anchor of this image is in the eye. Look closely and you’ll find the life, energy, power and you’ll feel the MANA (spirit). The eye tells the story of a disruptive positive energy always ready to dent the universe. Depending on the light and angle, sometimes the energy’s subtle and sometimes it’s glaring. But it’s always alive and ready to disrupt the universe and love and protect my family and all things I love with intense passion and gratitude.

Evolution of the bull. Blood, sweat & years. After 3 sessions and 22hrs of tattooing with world renowned @NikkoHurtado, the story's almost done.. Once you get over just how big Johnson’s arms are, the depth of the artwork is truly amazing to look over. But does the new tattoo make Johnson’s arms look smaller? Eh, who cares? He would still lay the smacketh down on me if I ever crossed The Rock the wrong way.

We look forward to seeing this sleeve when it is completed in full. It’s impressive enough already, so it should be cool to see the final result.
