We love trailers here at The Comeback and try to cover the best of them, big and small, in our coverage during any given week. But we can’t always get to all of them, which is why pooling them together in a one-stop shop for movie and TV anticipation seemed like a fun thing to do.

It was going to be difficult to keep up with last week’s batch of trailers which included Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Thor: Ragnarok, but there were still several fun trailers to enjoy this week, many of which came from the TV side. And a few of those previews were familiar shows repackaged for new audiences.

Here are the best trailers from the past seven days.

The Little Hours – June 30

Aubrey Plaza and Alison Brie as nuns? Sign us up. (No disrespect intended to Kate Micucci, who rounds out the trio of ) The trailer for The Little Hours looks like a serious drama as it begins. But once the names of comedic talents such as Dave Franco, Nick Offerman, Molly Shannon and Fred Armisen appear on the screen, it’s apparent this movie will be something quite different. Plaza ad Micucci’s foul mouths while outfitted in full nun habit quickly makes that obvious. But is most of the comedy derived from medieval characters using contemporary profanities?

Cloak and Dagger – 2018

Marvel is making a push for young adult audiences with TV shows on the Freeform network (formerly ABC Family). First up in that effort is Cloak and Dagger, a series which follows a pair of teenagers who gain superpowers after being test subjects for synthetic heroin. We’ll see if the show sticks to that same storyline. Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) feeds off people’s “light,” which could be an allegory for addiction. Tandy (Olivia Holt) can create daggers of light, while also feeding Tyrone’s hunger in something of a co-dependent relationship.

The Beguiled – June 23

Here’s a fiendishly creepy trailer. With Sofia Coppola behind the camera (and writing the script), and a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Kirsten Dunst (who’s worked with Coppola on The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette) and Elle Fanning, The Beguiled already looks extremely appealing. What happens to a small girls’ school in Civil War Virginia when a wounded Union soldiers shows up to disrupt their quiet, sheltered lives? Apparently, this is a remake of a 1971 film starring Clint Eastwood. With all due respect to Mr. Eastwood, this new version is probably better.

American Assassin – Sept. 15

This might be the best trailer of the week. Based on Vince Flynn’s series of novels about CIA agent Mitch Rapp, Dylan O’Brien might seem kind of young for this role, and that has some fans of the books worried about this movie. CBS Films originally intended to go older, but American Assassin is basically an origin story and the hope is that this becomes a franchise and O’Brien grows with the part. Pairing him with Michael Keaton as his mentor seems like great casting, along with Sanaa Lathan as a CIA director. Is Mitch Rapp our new Jason Bourne?

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, season 3 – May 19

Kimmy Schmidt goes to college? Oh, college campuses are a mine full of comedic material these days. Especially for someone who hasn’t had much life experience (or a very different type of life experience), like our favorite kidnapping victim. Titus gets to emulate Lemonade, which seems like a natural parody for the character. Nearly everyone is dealing with a breakup: Titus from Mikey, Lillian from Bobby Durst, and The Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne wants a divorce from Kimmy in prison. That’s about all we know from what’s essentially a teaser, but that’s probably enough.

Batman & Bill – May 6

The tone of this trailer seems a bit too serious, but the lack of credit Bill Finger has received for his crucial role in creating the Batman mythology is truly unfortunate and a big deal to diehard fans of the Caped Crusader. DC Comics and Warner Brothers are finally correcting that, crediting Finger alongside Bob Kane, and a documentary bringing Finger’s contributions to light is long overdue. Hopefully, this documentary shows what Batman would be without Finger’s input. The character almost certainly wouldn’t be the lasting icon he’s been for nearly 80 years.

The Wire

This is a clever idea by HBO. With so much of its programming now archived and available to be binged on HBO GO and HBO NOW, why not reach out to audiences who might not be familiar with those shows? Especially when they’re probably constantly told they need to watch those shows? How often does The Wire get referenced on social media? At the very least, it’s fun to be reminded that Idris Elba, Michael K. Williams and Lance Reddick established themselves as actors worth following here.

Six Feet Under

It doesn’t quite seem right to sum up five seasons of a TV series in three minutes, but being packaged as if they’re new shows coming up on HBO is an intriguing concept. Personally, I gave up on Six Feet Under after three seasons, so revisiting the series would be an intriguing experience. Let’s watch these shows again!

Deadwood

Of these three shows, Deadwood is the one we may be reunited with. Devoted fans are periodically teased with the hope that creator David Milch and HBO will finally produce a movie that gives the series the proper end it never received when canceled after three seasons. Ian McShane put some more wood on that fire this past week, saying Milch has finished a script.

Twin Peaks – May 21

Showtime has a different objective in mind with repackaging Twin Peaks in a new trailer. The network has a revival of the show coming in May, which has drawn a surprising amount of interest and curiosity for a show that lasted only two seasons and was a cult hit at best when it was on the air 26 years ago, relegated to Saturday nights by ABC. What was the big deal in the first place? This is a little — but thorough — taste of the show that was so dark and quirky as to almost defy description.
