Tom Cruise Top Gun

I feel the need…the need for a sequel. 31 years after Top Gun came out, there’s been a lot of talk about a potential follow-up, but not a ton of official follow-through. That changed Tuesday, with Tom Cruise going on an Australian morning talk show (yes, it’s already Wednesday there) and confirming that there will be a sequel, he’ll be involved, and filming will begin in the next year or so:

The presenters’ gasp when Cruise says “It’s true” is epic, as are the subsquent “Really?” “Really?” and “Really?” responses. He then says “I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. I know, I know, it’s happening. It’s definitely happening. You’re the first people I’ve said anything to. I’m here, you asked me, and I’m telling you, it’s definitely going to happen.” The presenters’ gasps, wows, and “You have just made my day” commments show some of the excitement around this, and that excitement’s likely to be repeated elsewhere as the intro music gets cranked up by fans across the world:

Will Harold Faltermeyer and Kenny Loggins be involved in the soundtrack again this time? Will Val Kilmer return, or Kelly McGillis? In any case, the pattern isn’t full for a Top Gun sequel, and plenty of us would like to see Cruise buzzing towers again. But will it be able to live up to the original? With such high expectations, this could well be venturing into a zone of danger. We’ll see how it works out, but those eager for a Top Gun sequel definitely got some good news Tuesday.
