The sequel to Independence Day you have been waiting for is finally here. Were you actually waiting for a sequel to Independence Day?
I mean, it’s been 20 years since the original blockbuster starring Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum saving the world from aliens who blew up the White House. How old is that movie? Randy Quaid was a hero. Most recently, he was a fugitive. You may have seen the first ID4 as a teenager and now have children of your own.
The point is that it’s been a long time. But the aliens that invaded Earth in 1996 are back, while Goldblum and a bearded Bill Pullman are ready to battle again. Here is the first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence.
Update, July 2021: This video has been removed.
This time, Liam Hemsworth is joining the fight. And he’s going to the moon. Also, Sela Ward is the President of the United States.
Also returning from the first film are Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brett Spiner. We have no idea where Will Smith is. Maybe he was making Concussion or Suicide Squad at the time. Perhaps he wanted a role for Jaden. Or he knew this whole thing just sounded like a bad idea. (Kind of like dropping the trailer on Sunday in the thick of NFL action.)
Director Roland Emmerich has always kind of been the poor man’s Michael Bay, and looks like he’s really tried to create a Bay-esque Transformers kind of man vs. aliens epic. (But remember, Emmerich did it first with the original Independence Day.)
The idea of humanity incorporating some of the technology that the extraterrestials left behind is intriguing. And the special effects and widescreen scope of this movie look impressive, much like they did 20 years ago. It all just looks bigger now. It’ll probably be seen in 3D and IMAX too, just to try and create even more of a spectacle.
Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theaters next summer on June 24, 2016.
