Hockey Fights of the Week: 1/19 – 2/1

The All-Star break is over which means it’s time to get back to doing one of the things we enjoy most – Hockey Fights of the Week! We took a week off as the All-Star break basically meant we only would’ve had a few fights to choose from, so we combined two weeks into one.

You can also thank the Pittsburgh Penguins for making this week’s list possible. They were involved in four of five fights and though they went 0-for-4, give the players credit for dropping the mitts.

Enjoy!

5. Bobby Farnham (PIT) vs Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (PHI) – Jan. 20th

The second period between the Penguins and Flyers was a great one if you’re a lover of hockey fights. There were four different fights in the second period and this is just one of them which made our top-5 list.

Farnham wins in the “talking trash” and “tossing helmet” categories, but he loses by a big margin in this one.

4. Steve Downie (PIT) vs Michael Latta (WAS) – Jan. 28th

This is a pretty solid fight in which all of the action and punches are thrown in some tight quarters. Latta is extremely impressive in this one, though it’s worth noting that Downie isn’t the fighter he once was. We’ll cover Downie more later.

3. Zach Sill (PIT) vs Tom Wilson (WAS) – Jan. 28th

This isn’t a fight. This is a beating. Sill has to be relieved this fight was broken up when it was as Wilson was the only one throwing punches.

2. Luke Gazdic (EDM) vs Deryk Engelland (CGY) – Jan. 31st

In our only fight which doesn’t feature a Pittsburgh Penguin getting beat up, a former Penguin dishes out some nice blows on one of the better fighters in the NHL. We’ve watched Gazdic fight a bunch and it’s rare he doesn’t maintain the edge.

1. Steve Downie (PIT) vs Luke Schenn (PHI) – Jan. 20th

Downie is back and once again things do not go his way. Schenn peppers Downie with lefts and by the time Downie figures out what’s going on, the only thing he can latch on to is Schenn’s visor.

Not a great week for the Penguins’ fighters.
