PDL’s staff selections for the 2015-16 NHL Awards

The 2015-16 NHL regular season is in the books, but before we completely turn to the playoffs and put the regular season out of mind, it’s time to hand out some hardware. Virtual hardware. The PDL team got together and each writer named their pick for the biggest individual NHL trophies.

Are our picks on the mark? Or did we miss high and wide?

Hart Trophy

It’s tough to make an argument against Kane or Karlsson for taking home the Hart based on their insane statistics. Thornton and Holtby are less common selections, but both were incredibly valuable to their team.

Norris Trophy

John was well aware of the ridicule he’d receive on this one, so feel free to let him have it in the comments. Karlsson finished in the top-5 for points this season, which is insane for a defenseman to accomplish. The NHL traditionally ignores actual defensive play for this award, but this is a case where offensive talent from a blueliner deservedly overshadows defensive talent.

Vezina Trophy

This one was difficult as several goaltenders had seasons worthy of the Vezina. Ultimately, the majority of the PDL team sided with Holtby and his record-tying 48 victories.

Calder Trophy

What an incredible season for rookies across the NHL. In any given year, any of the players listed above could have claimed the Calder. There are even a ton of deserving players not even mentioned in the picks above. Young talent made a huge impact in 2015-16.

Lady Byng Trophy

In what might have been his final season in the NHL, it’s only fitting Datsyuk walks away with his fifth Lady Byng Trophy. Datsyuk is easily one of the most respected players in the league and his play and low total of penalty minutes (14) reflect that.

Selke Trophy

Almost a clean sweep (way to go, Taylor) as Kopitar gets plenty of love for his defensive skills. There are some extremely talented forward who excel on defense and Kopitar (as well as Bergeron) lead the pack.

Jack Adams Awards

Sullivan has only been in his role with the Penguins since December which only makes his accomplishments that much more impressive. After completely rejuvenating the Penguins, it’s tough to not award Sullivan.
