NASCAR announced on Monday it indefinitely suspended Cup Series driver Cody Ware.
The suspension came after prosecutors in North Carolina charged Ware with “assault by strangulation,” a felony for inflicting serious injury and misdemeanor assault on a woman, according to the Iredell County Sheriff’s office.
Ware was released on a $3,000 bond on Wednesday, but he now faces additional charges related to the alleged strangulation.
Prosecutors on Friday charged Ware with assault to inflict serious injury and issued a criminal summons for communicating threats. The Iredell County Sheriff’s office confirmed that Ware was in custody as of Friday afternoon. He is due in court on Monday to be arraigned on the new charges.
Ware has a court date for May 1 on the original charges. The investigation is ongoing.
“We are aware of the incident regarding Cody Ware and his indefinite suspension from NASCAR competition,” Rick Ware Racing, which is owned by Cody Ware’s father, said in a statement Monday after the initial arrest.
“We understand NASCAR’s position on this matter and accept their decision. The matter is still under investigation, and Cody is fully cooperating with the authorities, as due process takes its course.”
