At the end of 2015, Abby Wambach’s career with the U.S. women’s national team was coming to an end. There was celebration and plenty of praise from those across the world. This included President Barack Obama, who called one of the U.S.’s best women’s soccer players the GOAT.
Congrats on a great career, Abby Wambach. For the goals you’ve scored & the kids you’ve inspired, you’re the GOAT! pic.twitter.com/Kud56ChsBO

Though President Obama definitely meant this as a compliment, Wambach was confused. As she revealed on the Rich Eisen Show on Tuesday, Wambach didn’t know that GOAT didn’t mean the animal, but rather was an acronym for “Greatest of All Time.” This caused much confusion for the USWNT star.
As Wambach says in the clip, her first thought was that the President was insulting her. Look, if you follow POTUS on Twitter, he doesn’t really insult anyone. Everything is very PC. However, that thought never crossed Wambach’s mind.
She soon called her agent, who quickly explained to her that this was a compliment. Thankfully, she had the right mind to talk to someone first before complaining about it.
After hearing the comment, Wambach was quick to say she didn’t really think of herself as the GOAT. However, if there is ever a time to take that sort of compliment to heart, it’s when you get it from the freaking President.
This is a damn good anecdote. And it’s probably something Wambach can talk about for a long time.
