The news about the Chapecoenese soccer team, whose plane crashed in Bolivia on Monday night, has shaken the sports world. It is a truly unspeakable tragedy.
Well two other Brazilian soccer teams, Corinthians and San Paulo FC, have petitioned the Brazilian Serie A to allow Chapecoenese to use players on loan for free and then allow the club to avoid relegation for three years.
This is the club’s statement translated from Portuguese by For the Win:
“At this time of loss and deep sadness, we presidents of Brazilian clubs publish this note to express our most sincere condolences and solidarity to Chapecoense Football Association and its fans, especially to the families and friends of the athletes, coaching staff and directors involved in the tragedy that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.
Even aware of the irreparable damage caused by this terrible event, the teams understand that time is of unity, support and assistance to Chapecoense.”
The gesture is not only selfless but a great sign of sportsmanship during one of the toughest moments in the league history. Brazil’s Serie A is showing that support can come from anywhere and that sports can help others handle adversity.
