USMNT watch party KC

It was a frustrating 38 minutes for the American soccer world but the USMNT finally broke through with a goal against Iran. That goal might be huge as the USMNT has to win against Iran to advance in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Christian Pulisic was on the positive end of a ground cross by Sergiño Dest. Pulisic gave it his all, almost literally, as he and the ball traveled into the goal.

Pulisic was down for a while with replays showing Pulisic getting drilled in the groin by Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Being in likely excruciating pain (from personal soccer playing experience), Pulisic re-entered the game after a few minutes of being on the ground and then walking it off.

The USMNT has been the better team in the first half but Iran did a good job shutting down the passing lanes in their attacking third. That caused the United States to resort to crosses and low-success shots that sailed over the goal. Nevertheless, persistence paid off and the U.S. is ahead at halftime. When the second half started, Pulisic was subbed off for Brenden Aaronson.

Many in the U.S. celebrated and breathed a sigh of relief when the USMNT took the lead.
