For the first time ever, two MLS teams eliminated Liga MX teams on the same night to advance in the Concacaf Champions League. The New York Red Bulls eliminated Tijuana after winning in Mexico last week as well as at Red Bull Arena. Then later in the night, Toronto FC eliminated Tigres on away goals after a phenomenal Sebastian Giovinco free kick sealed the 4-4 aggregate win.

Sometimes the terribleness of fandom rears its head and that became the case of one Tigres “fan” who was too butthurt to accept his team losing that he resorted in sending Jozy Altidore some racist remarks.

Loosely translated, it said he hoped Altidore would be “injured for life,” a “fucking black shit monkey,” a “motherfucker,” and a “pussy” among other things.

While many of us would be upset about this or might want to respond in kind to the person, Altidore killed him with kindness in his public response. Translated, it said “Thank you for your support and these great words friend. I just want the best for you and your family. Best regards.”

It’s sickening that this is still a thing but that’s the case. There is a deep seeded rivalry between the United States and Mexico as well as MLS and Liga MX. But rivalry should never go into racism. Even if the US and Mexico combined World Cup bids or MLS and Liga MX have a partnership to work together, that doesn’t mean everything is fine and we’re all friends.
