The pushback against Kanye West over his antisemitic comments and racist stances has spilled into the sports world. In the same week in which sportswear giant Adidas finally announced it would be cutting ties with Ye, universities and pro teams that use his music as part of their pre-game ceremonies are doing the same.
On Thursday, Texas A&M announced that they would no longer play West’s “Power” before the Aggies take the field during home games. Now comes news that Premier League team Bournemouth will be doing the same.
According to The Athletic, while the side has played the 2010 song as part of their pre-match routine for several seasons, they will not do so any longer. While they had first started using the track before matches during their rise to the top league, they stopped playing it for a brief period before bringing it back during the 2019-2022 season.
Per The Daily Echo, team supporters have “expressed concerns around continuing to play the track as the team comes onto the pitch.” A new track will reportedly be used before the side’s match against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
West remains radioactive to brands, companies, sports teams, and just about anyone else at this point. Based on his demeanor in recent days, it doesn’t sound like he plans on being contrite or apologizing, so expect that to continue.
