This weekend, the United States Women’s National Team fell to Sweden in a penalty shootout, marking the earliest the USWNT has ever been eliminated from the World Cup. But Sweden star Magdalena Eriksson does not think this is the end of the United States’ dominance.
Following the match, Magdalena Eriksson made it clear that she was very impressed with the USWNT during Sunday’s match, calling the United States “the toughest team we’ve faced” at the World Cup.
“I think they proved today they’re still an amazing team. They’re definitely the toughest team we’ve faced so far in the tournament,” Eriksson said according to Jonathan Tannenwald.
Eriksson said that the United States has some very strong young players that make their future bright and also pointed out that the team was also missing some of its top stars in this tournament.
“They have amazing players. And like you said, the youngsters really impressed me today. I think both [Naomi] Girma and [Sophia] Smith had an amazing game. You also have [Catarina] Macario and [Mallory] Swanson that are injured,” Eriksson said.
This leads Eriksson to conclude that the USWNT is still a strong team that will continue to be dominant in the future.
“So, no, the future is still bright for the U.S. They’re still a massive powerhouse in women’s football, and they will be for a long time,” Eriksson said.
