Last month, nine-year-old Everton fan George Shaw got a chance to meet his favorite player, Gerard Deulofeu, and score a goal at Goodison Park during halftime of a Premier League game.

Shaw, who has cerebral palsy, had caught Deulofeu’s attention when the boy’s father posted a video of him playing soccer on Twitter.

Now, Shaw’s strike has been named Everton’s Goal of the Month, with an overwhelming 86 percent of the vote from the team’s fans.

Young Blue George scores at Goodison Park – Everton Football Club | Facebook

From Everton’s site:

To mark the achievement, the Club has invited George to our End of Season Awards evening, which will be held at St George’s Hall on Wednesday 11 May.

“I never thought I would win. I thought I’d come close because of all the support I’ve had but I can’t believe I won!” said George on learning of his victory.

“Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I can’t wait for the End of Season Awards now. It will be great.”

These types of promotions sometimes feel slimy or even exploitative, but in this case the award seems to have made Shaw happy, which is the most important thing.
