The United States Women’s National Team may have lost to Sweden on Sunday, ending their run through the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but Swedish star Kosovare Asllani sounds fully convinced the USWNT will be back.
After defeating the USWNT in a penalty shootout on Sunday, Kosovare Asllani made it clear that any talk of the USWNT losing its dominance is premature.
“It’s the U.S. They will raise their standards, and they’re going to come back. I’ve heard there’s been a lot of talk about it, but they will come back for sure,” Asllani said, according to Jonathan Tannenwald.
“They have so much quality in their team, and this defeat will not take them down. I expect them to be ready for the next World Cup. We see more and more national teams are investing and raising their level as well, but, I mean, they [the U.S.] have a really good team.”
Asllani followed up those comments with a pretty bold assertion: “don’t talk [bleep] about the U.S. women.”
“So I wouldn’t say that they’re out of the game at all. So don’t talk [bleep] about the U.S. women. I think you should be proud of your team. You have a really good team, and really good players, and they are taking the fight not just on the pitch, outside of the pitch,” Asllani said.
“And this is what it takes to raise women’s football to the next level. So I think you should encourage them and be a little bit more positive towards them.”
Even though they lost, it’s clear that the USWNT has a lot of respect from the Swedish players.
