Serbia goal vs. Cameroon

Serbia ended a 310-minute World Cup scoring drought with a pair of first half stoppage time goals vs. Cameroon.

The first, in the 46th minute, came from a set piece off the head of defender Strahinja Pavlovic. The kick was taken from somewhat deep, but the delivery was spot on, and the Red Bull Salzburg man buried it to the keeper’s right.

The goal erased Cameroon’s early lead, knotting the match at 1-1 but it wouldn’t stay there for long. Just two minutes later, Serbia went on top through a Sergej Milinković-Savić goal. Cameroon failed to clear the ball and Serbia regained possession. The Eagles cycled the ball outside the box until the Lazio striker found some space, then found some glory with his first World Cup goal. It was the cherry on top of a strong first half from him.

Cameroon’s No. 1 Keeper Andre Onana was removed from the squad earlier in the day, due to a dispute with manager Rigobert Song. Onana started the first match of the tournament vs. Switzerland, making two saves and allowing one goal in the loss.

Serbia started the second half in a similar fashion, adding a third goal at 53′. This time it was Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrović joining the party.

Serbia’s last World Cup goal was in the 5th minute of their second group stage match in 2018 vs. Switzerland. Since then, they were held scoreless by Brazil in both their final match in 2018 as well as their first match in 2022.

The team is currently under investigation by FIFA for hanging a ‘hateful’ banner in their locker room before their opening match vs. Brazil.
