We have seen soccer players ejected from the pitch or a variety of reasons over the years, from headbutting an opponent to a physical confrontation with an official to just about anything you can imagine. That being said, this appears to be a new one, as a soccer player in Sweden was reportedly ejected from a match after excessive flatulence, shall we say?

Adam Lindin Ljungkvist was handed a red card by a ref for what was merely described as unsportsmanlike behavior. The soccer player blamed some stomach issues for the incident late in a match, which was worthy of a yellow card from the ref. A red card followed shortly after the yellow card as that was the player’s second yellow card of the game. He claims he did not cut loose as a show of disrespect for the call or his opponent, but try telling that to the ref in the heat of the moment.

It was a strange red card, I can hardly believe it myself. I had a bit of a tummy upset and in the last minute of the game I let off a fart,” Ljungkvist told Sweedish newspaper Aftonbladet. “The referee showed me a yellow card, then followed up with red. It was my second yellow and I had no memory of my first at all. I was pretty angry with the referee, and I could not quite believe what had happened.”

“I just did a perfectly innocent fart, and got sent off for it. The referee said that it was unsportsmanlike behavior.”

Talk about a crappy penalty. Ljungkvist was a bit more harsh with his summary of the penalty, but kept his sense of humor about it as well.

“I think it was a shitty call. I can only laugh about it.”
