For the first time since 1986, the United States Men’s National Team will not be in the World Cup.
The USMNT failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup after a stunning 2-1 loss to Trinidad & Tobago on Thursday night, and with victories by Panama and Honduras. The odds of this all happening were tiny (even a USMNT draw and they were in great shape), and it’s an absolutely embarrassing result for the United States.
99/100 scenarios would've put #USMNT in #WorldCup or at least playoff. Only one, improbable, scenario = elimination and it just happened.

Twitter understandably had a lot to say about it. Here are just some of the many, many examples:
The United States has been eliminated from World Cup 2018. The most surreal and embarrassing night in US soccer history.

Pulisic is the best young soccer player the US has ever had. He must wait 5 yrs for his first World Cup. Worst of many gut punches. #USMNT

So many painful aspects to this, but having USA's first transcendent talent not get the World Cup stage next summer is near top of the list

Strictly from a sports wins/losses & results angle, #USMNT missing out on World Cup is the worst story we've had in over 20 years.

Today is the worst day in US Soccer History.

Not sure I've ever felt quite this disappointed by sports before.

This is easily the most embarrassed I have ever been as a sports fan.
And I root for the #Vikings.
