The United States Men’s National Team enters the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a host nation with its most talented World Cup roster yet and one of the easiest paths it’s ever faced as a result of a diluted field of teams. It should be a dream scenario for the team and its fans, but there’s still plenty of reason for skepticism headed into its opening match against Paraguay.
While everything seems to be set up for the United States to advance out of its group and potentially win a match in the knockout round for the first time since 2002, the roster construction, a general lack of chemistry, and a star player who’s barely played with the team leave a lot of room for questions.
Best USMNT Roster Ever?
From an individual player perspective, this is pretty undeniably the best World Cup roster in USMNT history in terms of both talent and experience.
The team’s 505 combined caps are the third-highest of any USMNT World Cup squad, behind only the 2006 squad with 537 and the 2002 team with 518. But the players aren’t just experienced at the international level, they also have plenty of experience playing for high-level European clubs.
Christian Pulisic currently plays for AC Milan while previously playing a key role and winning a Champions League title with Chelsea. Weston McKennie scored five goals in 36 appearances with Juventus in Serie A in Italy. Malik Tillman scored six goals in 29 appearances in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. Timothy Weah scored two goals in 28 appearances for Marseille. Chris Richards had a career-high 196 clearances, 55 tackles, 43 interceptions, and a goal across 33 appearances with Crystal Palace and was named U.S. Soccer’s Male Player of the Year for 2025. Folarin Balogun, meanwhile, had 13 goals in 30 appearances with Monaco in Ligue 1.
Beyond that group, Tyler Adams anchors Bournemouth’s midfield, Antonee Robinson starts at left back for Fulham, and Brenden Aaronson plays for Leeds United – all in the Premier League. Haji Wright also scored 17 goals for Coventry City, helping them earn promotion to the Premier League. In the Bundesliga, Gio Reyna and Joe Scally are both at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Sergiño Dest and Ricardo Pepi currently play in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven, while Alex Freeman plays for Villarreal in La Liga. Auston Trusty is part of Celtic’s squad in the Scottish Premiership.
On top of that, thirteen of those players are returning from the 2022 squad, tying the U.S. record for most consecutive World Cup returnees.
With that roster, coupled with the diluted expanded field and what should hypothetically be a home-field advantage throughout the tournament, expectations should be sky-high. However, there’s a lot of room for skepticism.
Questions Remain
Despite the talent and the seemingly favorable situation ahead of them, there are still plenty of reasons to be a bit skeptical heading into the opening match against Paraguay.
- Thin Midfield. One of the biggest red flags is the concerning lack of depth in the midfield. While midfield looked like the deepest position group in the USMNT player pool, that’s not exactly how it materialized when the World Cup roster was selected, with Tanner Tessmann and Aidan Morris left off the team entirely. While the starters in the midfield are arguably better than they’ve ever been, the depth just isn’t there.
- Limited Experience Together. While the team is undeniably talented on an individual level, those individuals haven’t actually spent that much time playing together, with just 12 players hitting double digits caps this cycle. That means roughly half the roster has minimal time on the field together in meaningful matches.
- The Best Player Has Barely Played. Pulisic is the biggest star on the roster. The problem is, he hasn’t spent much time with the team this cycle. Pulisic spent much of the past year away from the USMNT, sitting out the 2025 Gold Cup entirely to rest after a grueling Milan season and missing the November camp as well. His September camp marked his first minutes with the national team since spring.
- Richard’s Injury Status. Richards is the anchor of the USMNT defense, but an ankle injury sidelined him for the team’s two preparatory friendlies heading into the World Cup. While he has returned to training and is expected to be available for the World Cup, his fitness and health are certainly in question.
These questions were not answered emphatically during the team’s two friendlies heading into the World Cup, as the USMNT beat Senegal 3-2 and fell 2-1 to Germany, so it will be up to the team to make a statement in the knockout round, which begins on Friday against Paraguay.
