Trips to the gym and the laundromat are often time-consuming, if not reviled, experiences for many people. But one new invention seeks to streamline the time requirements of both those activities.

The BWM (bike washing machine) is a proposed invention from students at the Dalian Nationalities University in China that combines an exercise bike with a washing machine. As users pedal the bike, the energy from that kinetic movement powers the laundry process in the front wheel of the contraption.

“When you ride this bike, the pedaling motion causes the drum of the washing machine to rotate,” the designers wrote. “At the same time, the superfluous electricity is generated which can be used to power the display screen or stored for future use.”

By doing laundry and providing a workout, this potential new appliance would allow users to simultaneously knock out a physically and mentally taxing activity from the weekly schedule. Yes, negatives of both activities are still present — you still have to exercise and load and unload the washer — but at least this lets you free up time in the rest of your day for fun.

The bike is eco-friendly and even allows for the storage of extra electricity for its display screen or another laundry cycle.

So far the bike’s inventors have yet to comment on their creation. There is also no indication if this concept will ever come to fruition, and the specifics on the wash cycle itself are murky.

Still, the idea is a tantalizing one. Something that can knock out two typically loathsome activities at once will also be intriguing no matter how viable it is.
