Herschel Walker, the Republican candidate for Senate in Georgia, faces Democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock in a special run-off election next month.

The two sides have already spent more than $241 million on the race. The campaign turned particularly nasty in the lead-up to last week’s midterm elections as two women accused the pro-life Walker of financing their abortions—allegations Walker denied.

Walker faces a significant problem in the head-to-head election: popular Georgia governor Brian Kemp, who just won re-election over his Democratic opponent Stacey Abrams, won’t be at the top of the ballot. Kemp, however, is expected to campaign with Walker despite the Democrats already seizing control of the Senate in 2023.

Another major issue with Walker is the man who recruited him to run in the first place, former president Donald Trump. Though Trump absolved Walker of the abortion scandal, two sources told CNN that the Walker campaign “told Trump to campaign elsewhere” in the days before last Tuesday’s election.

Now, Walker’s advisors are signaling they want the help of Trump’s chief GOP rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who also won sweeping re-election on Tuesday night.

“We need every Republican surrogate we can get into the state to put their arm around Herschel,” Ralph Reed, the president of the Faith & Freedom Coalition, told CNN. “I think that [Virginia Gov. Glenn] Youngkin or DeSantis is a better fit for soft Republicans or independents in the suburbs that we need to turn out.”

Georgia voters head to the polls on Dec. 6th.
