On Friday night, WNBA superstar Brittney Griner made her official return to the court for the first time in 18 months after she missed all of last season while in Russian captivity. And while much of the attention was on her as she made her on-court debut during a preseason game against the Los Angeles Sparks, she made sure to be a good teammate, too.

During the third quarter of Friday night’s exhibition game, Phoenix Mercury teammate Sophie Cunningham went down with a knee injury and needed help off the court. Brittney Griner sprung into action, helping carry Cunningham off the court so that she didn’t have to put any weight on her injured knee.

Griner was asked about the moment following the game, and she had a strong message for her teammates.

“When one of us goes down, we’re always right there,” Griner said according to ABC News. “That’s one thing about this team — we’re always there for each other. We’ve got each others’ backs, big time.”

Griner’s teammates certainly had her back throughout her detainment in Russia, constantly raising awareness and advocating on her behalf until she was ultimately released in December. It sounds like there’s a strong relationship between the teammates.
