‘Enough is enough’: Shannon Sharpe done with Caitlin Clark after viral incident

Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark was seemingly exposed for her poor defense during Saturday night’s blowout loss to the Portland Fire, and she’s now facing some heavy criticism as a result.

While Clark struggled on the offensive end in Saturday’s loss, scoring just six points on a 1-for-7 shooting performance, her biggest struggles came on the defensive side of the ball, where she could not stay out of foul trouble and could not contain Portland guard Carla Weite.

It was a bad game for Clark, but longtime sports analyst Shannon Sharpe seems to think this is part of a larger pattern for Clark, and he’s tired of it.

Clark’s Defensive Struggles

Over the years, Clark has established herself as one of the league’s most dangerous offensive players, but defense has never been considered a strength of her game. That issue resurfaced on Saturday night as the Fire consistently targeted her defensively and found plenty of success doing so.

Clark not only had trouble containing Weite, who finished with 18 points and 12 assists, but she also struggled to stay on the floor due to foul trouble. As a result, she spent large stretches of the game on the bench rather than impacting the game as a scorer.

By halftime, Clark had already accumulated three fouls. Just two minutes into the second half, she was whistled for her fourth, prompting head coach Stephanie White to sit her for much of the third quarter. Clark re-entered the game with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter, but less than two minutes later she committed her fifth foul and was quickly sent back to the bench. She did not return until midway through the fourth quarter, by which point the outcome had largely been decided.

The Fire took advantage of Clark’s defensive struggles. They repeatedly attacked her on the perimeter, drew fouls, and ultimately limited her time on the court, making it difficult for her to establish any offensive rhythm. It was a blueprint similar to the one used by the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday night, indicating that it’s a pattern other teams might try to follow.

Shannon Sharpe Calls Out Clark

Clark’s defensive struggles, coupled with a heated exchange with her coach on the sideline, have led to a lot of criticism this week, and longtime sports personality and former NFL star Shannon Sharpe joined that chorus.

Sharpe called out Clark for her defensive struggles and expressed support for White’s decision to put her on the bench.

“This is not isolated, it’s every night, she doesn’t play defense,” Sharpe said following the incident. “Why you trying to drop a play offensively? Guard your man defensively!”

Sharpe pointed out that he’s long defended Clark, but he is now done.

“Y’all know me, I’ve been in Caitlin Clark’s corner,” Sharpe continued. “But enough is enough now. I’m tired of her behavior, I’m tired of the shoving, I’m tired of the entitlement. Y’all say she got passion, but where’s that passion on defense? Because guess what everybody doing? Attacking her.”
