Indiana Fever reserve Sophie Cunningham remains at the forefront of league news following her comments on transgender women and their place in women’s sports last month. Leading up to last night’s matchup between the Indiana Fever and the New York Liberty, fans from both sides of the spectrum gathered outside Brooklyn’s Barclays Center to make their voices heard.

As fans entered the Brooklyn arena last night, the New York City Police Department worked vigorously to separate competing demonstrations regarding transgender rights. Chants echoed along Atlantic Avenue, with supporters of both sides in what seemed to be a peaceful protest.

“Let women speak…” and “Trans Lives Matter…” were common chants heard throughout the evening, along with comments made by women as part of the demonstration.

“It’s also showing that the narrative is kinda twisted; all we’re asking for is privacy, safety, and an equal playing field, and that’s not what we’re getting right now…” one woman protested via Fox News.

“The WNBA needs to take a leadership position; the commissioner needs to stand up and say that ‘we’re gonna test for sex,’ put all of this chaos behind them, and focus on basketball,” someone else added.

In a pregame interview with Cunningham, the guard addressed the situation at hand and attempted to hold neutral ground.

“I do think that’s something America could get better at, maybe not always agreeing with people but also showing peace and love. It’s okay to disagree…,” Cunningham said.

As the situation thickens, the public scrutiny increases, and Cunningham’s comments continue to become more than just a WNBA matter, but rather an intense political debate nationwide.
