Over the weekend, frustrations seemed to boil over on the sideline between Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark and head coach Stephanie White amidst the team’s blowout loss to the Portland Fire. After a heated exchange, Clark was briefly placed on the bench in favor of rookie Raven Johnson.

The incident has led to a lot of media coverage, especially considering Clark’s struggles on the defensive side of the ball. Now, one of Clark’s teammates is addressing the exchange.

Heated Exchange Between Clark and White

During a timeout in the second quarter of Saturday’s matchup, Clark and White appeared to get into a tense exchange on the sideline. The moment was caught on video by a fan in attendance, and it quickly went viral on social media.

The video shows White visibly fired up as she directed several emphatic comments toward Clark. At points in the video, White pointed directly at her star guard and slapped her knee, seemingly expressing frustration.

Initially, Clark remained composed, sitting on the bench, sipping water, and avoiding eye contact while White spoke. After a few moments, however, Clark responded with some visible emotion of her own, raising her hands as she fired back at her coach.

While it’s not clear what was said during the conversation, White responded by taking Clark out of the game, putting Johnson on the court in her place.

Lexie Hull Addresses the Incident

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media and has dominated the conversation on sports talk radio and television. On Monday, one of Clark’s teammates, Lexie Hull, addressed the heated exchange during an interview with Yahoo Sports Daily.

“There’s frustration,” Hull said. “We noticed that they were trying to pick on Caitlin a little bit on defense, and she was getting called for some fouls. You know, fouls aren’t fun – she got in some foul trouble, our team got into some foul trouble.

Hull downplayed the incident and Clark’s subsequent benching.

“That’s just all it was. I think it’s just part of the game,” she said. “There’s frustrations that rise, and decisions have to be made.”

Hull noted that the incident happened “in the moment” and wasn’t a longstanding feud between Clark and White. She also said that it has not impacted the team since it happened.

“This was not something that carried on. This was in the moment, something that happened,” she said. “Not something that’s talked about now in the locker room, or even later on in the game. It’s just something that happened. Unfortunately, Caitlin’s got a camera on her 24/7, so you see every little thing. But this happens almost every day in women’s basketball, so not something that we’re worried about at all.”
