Notes and Observations

  • As always, remember that these rankings are fluid, and will change from week-to-week.
  • Alabama solidified its grip on the No. 1 ranking in the poll by whipping Tennessee 49-10.
  • Yet, the Crimson Tide did not capture all of the first-place votes. Washington — which was idle last week — received one first place vote, and remained at No. 3.
  • After its near miss against NC State, Clemson dropped from second to fourth. Ohio State moved from second to fourth with its overtime victory over Wisconsin.
  • At the same time, our panel refused to punish the Badgers for losing, as Wisconsin remains at No. 8 this week.
  • For the third straight week, Nebraska remains the most polarizing team in the poll. Two voters had the Huskers at No. 8, while two others didn’t have them on the ballot. This issue will resolve itself in two weeks when Nebraska travels to Wisconsin.
  • We were equally split on Baylor. Two voters put the Bears in the top 10, while another left them off the ballot completely. As Kevin Causey pointed out in his “Five Overrated Teams” piece, we have know way of knowing how good Baylor really is until it plays a top quality opponent. That may not happen until Nov. 12, when the Bears visit Oklahoma.
  • Florida and Utah re-entered the rankings this weekend, landing at No. 15 and 16, respectively.
