The drama surrounding UFC 200 and Conor McGregor’s desire to participate continued this morning on McGregor’s Instagram page.
McGregor was originally scheduled to fight Nate Diaz at UFC 200, but after tweets saying he retired which stemmed from McGregor’s refusal to participate in promotional events, UFC head Dana White pulled the plug on the fight. Jon Jones versus Daniel Cormier is the new main event on the card.
McGregor seems to be not only upset about his inability to avenge his loss to Diaz in UFC 196 back in March, but also about White’s controlling nature. The UFC head man said earlier he plans to pit McGregor against the winner of Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo for the his next fight instead of a rematch with Diaz.
Still, there are murmurs McGregor could be back in the fold as early as UFC 201, which is too soon for a matchup with Edgar or Aldo, opening the door for a rematch with Diaz.
McGregor built himself a reputation on bluster and brashness, so it is unlikely he relents anytime soon. Then again, so did White. The money at stake should be enough to force the two sides together, but it seems doubtful given how pubic this disagreement is and how stubborn both individuals are that this will be reconciled anytime soon.
