French rugby club Racing 92 recently faced off against the Leicester Tigers in the semifinals of the European Champion Cup. They won the match and will now face Saracens at the Grand Stade de Lyon for the championship on May 14.

One member of the team, Martin Castrogiovanni, will not participate in that game, mostly because of what he was doing instead of participating in the previous game.

Castrogiovanni had asked for permission to miss the match against Leicester so that he could return to his birth country of Argentina to deal with a family problem. The club approved and assumed that’s where he’d be while they played their match. Instead, photos appeared showing Castrogiovanni partying in Las Vegas with football superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic and others. Oops.

Rule number one when telling a lie is making sure that it’s not easily fact-checkable. Rule number two when telling a lie is making sure that no one is taking photos for the expressed purpose of posting them online or in newspapers. Castrogiovanni did not take either rule into account.

Racing released a statement confirming that he had been suspended and that further punishment or legal judgments could be coming.

“Following the publication in the media of photographs showing Martin Castrogiovanni with Paris Saint-Germain footballers this weekend at a hotel in Las Vegas, while the entire Racing squad was in Nottingham to contest a European Cup semi-final, Racing 92 have decided to suspend the player as a precautionary measure prior to launching legal proceedings.”

Hope you enjoyed the party, Martin.
