Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor’s fight is on August 26th, but a few things still need to be settled. In fact, everything won’t be decided until as soon as 10 days before on August 16th.

That’s when the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) will vote on whether or not the two men will be allowed to wear 8-ounce gloves, Executive Director Bob Bennett told MMA Fighting.

“They would have to come before the commission and articulate why they should be permitted to have their fight using 8-ounce gloves,” Bennett said. “The chairman (Anthony Marnell) and commissioners would make the determination with the health and safety of the fighters being the number-one priority.”

The official rules state that boxers who fight at 147 pounds and up cannot wear 8-ounce gloves and instead have to wear 10-ounce gloves. Mayweather and Conor McGregor will both be fighting at 154 pounds, heavier than the 135-147 pound range that allows fighters to use 8-ounce gloves.

There is a special clause, however, wherein both fighters can use 8-ounce gloves if they mutually agree to it.

Last week was when Mayweather’s team got the ball rolling on this topic, Bennett added. After just a week of discussions it seems like both camps are working towards getting the gloves shrunk from 10 to 8 ounces.

Unsurprisingly, the two fighters aren’t letting their reps do all the talking. Both Mayweather Jr. and McGregor have gone on social media to state their case for the lighter gloves.

This fight should be interesting.
