It’s one of the more horrifying things that can happen out on a baseball diamond.
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker was hit in the head with a line drive Sunday afternoon against the Seattle Mariners, off the batt of Kyle Seager. Shoemaker was struck on the right side of his head with the ball in just the second inning of the game. MLB Statcast recorded the exit velocity of 105 mph.
Shoemaker was surrounded by teammates and members of the training staff as he was helped up. Seager made his way towards the mound to check up on Shoemaker
The Angels announced on Twitter that Shoemaker suffered a laceration on the right side of his head, and that he was taken to the hospital for a CT scan.
The Mariners expressed their thoughts for Shoemaker on Twitter.
Our thoughts are with #Angels pitcher @mattshoe52. He exits the game here in the 2nd after being struck by a ball off the bat.

Hopefully Shoemaker is able to make a quick recovery. Luckily for him, he was able to at least turn his head, as opposed to being hit directly in the face.
UPDATE: Angels beat writer for the LA Times Pedro Moura reported that Shoemaker “is speaking” but a CT scan showed a “small skull fracture and hematoma” and will stay overnight in the hospital.
Matt Shoemaker suffered a small skull fracture and hematoma, CT scan showed. He’s spending the night in the hospital, seeing a neurologist.

The Angels said Shoemaker is speaking. Mike Scioscia said Shoemaker remained conscious while he was examined on the mound.
